An Article About a Much Used High Blood Pressure Medication
What is Vasotec?
Vasotec is a medication whose generic name is enalapril. It is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney problems, or to improve a person's chances of survival after having a heart attack. Generic Vasotec is exactly the same as the name brand medication. This medication is an ACE inhibitor. An ACE inhibitor works by preventing the formation of angiotensen II in the body. Angiotensen II makes the arteries in the body narrow thereby not allowing enough blood flow thus causing high blood pressure. By preventing the formation, Vasotec (enalapril) allows more blood to flow through the arteries in the body lowering blood pressure. Generic Vasotec (enalapril) is usually cheaper than the name brand drug because you are not paying for the brand name and advertising associated with brand name products. You should feel very confident that the generic version works just as well as the name brand.
Important Information about Vasotec (enalapril)
Vasotec (enalapril) should be avoided by pregnant women. It is very important to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication as serious birth defects can occur. If you become pregnant while taking this, discontinue use and see your health care professional right away.
Side Effects
Since generic Vasotec (enalapril) is the same as Vasotec you should avoid it if you have ever had an allergic reaction to the brand name drug. Also, if you are allergic to other ACE inhibitors it is very important to let your healthcare provider know as you may need to use a different medication to control your condition.
If you have ever been diagnosed with liver disease, heart disease, or kidney disease make sure to let your doctor know. Vasotec (enalapril) is contraindicated (not recommended) for patients with these disorders.
Vasotec (enalapril) is excreted in breast milk. Never use it if you are nursing a baby except under the advice of your physician.
Dosing Instructions
If you're taking Vasotec (enalapril) you must follow the detailed instructions that should be provided to you by your pharmacist or physician when receiving your medication.
Vasotec (enalapril) should never be taken in larger doses than prescribed or for longer than prescribed. It may be taken either with or without food but it is important you take this medication with a full glass of water.
Never stop taking your Vasotec (enalapril) even if you feel better except on the advice of your physician. Remember, high blood pressure often has no symptoms so even if you feel well you may still need to take your medication. You should take it at the same time every day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as your remember but never take two doses at once. If it is almost time for your next dose, then skip the first dose and start with your next dose.
